GPS, camera and notebook gadget help

For one of the sites I’m going to be working on I need a gadget which can perform the following tasks:

  1. Take photos.
  2. Log the GPS coordinates of the photo automatically, either as part of the meta-data associated with the photo or in a separate file.
  3. Make notes about the photo, e.g. ‘this is the Rosetta Stone, main entrance, British Museum’.
  4. Transfer this data easily to a computer.

Can anyone suggest a handy device which will do all of this? I suspect an iPhone would work but I’m not a big fan of Apple and I don’t want to pay a monthly fee to a telecoms company.

  1. The Nikon D3X seems to be nearly five grand according to Amazon – I don’t want to spend more than a few hundred.

  2. All you really need is a camera which can record an accurate timestamp with each image, and some way of correlating that with NMEA GPS logs. Trekbuddy for any J2ME device with a bluetooth GPS unit will record logs for you, I got a GPS radio for about GBP20 on ebay.

I did this first time I was in Japan, in fact—I don’t remember what software I used for it, but it was on the mac, for sure. I’ll try and dig it up if you want.

As for notes, well, I would often just take photos of the plaques next to a display. Pen and paper, maybe?

  3. Get an n900 mobile phone.

Runs debian and is completely hackable.

Oh and does all you ask out of the box with no new software needed.

  4. Do you need a phone contract in order for it to work though? If you bring yours to ChineseBeer I will have a look at it. 🙂
