Happy New Year

Last night I went to Sarah’s house party last night which was great fun, although I only knew a few people there. We ended up scaling a maintenance ladder to get on the roof in time for the fireworks at midnight—it was amazing being able to look out over a large part of Manchester and see the city lit up in various colours. Unfortunately I spent most of today ill in bed with a horrible cold which I felt coming on last night, but it gave me chance to have a bit of a rest and reply to the texts waiting for my on my phone today (I’m terribly slow at doing this, I’ve never managed to get the hang of phone keypads for some reason).

Last year’s resolutions

Have at least one article published in a paper magazine: Sort of managed this with two reviews in the UKUUG newsletter and four articles plus an interview in the Manchester FoE newsletter. I also got my paper accepted for APCHC, which I guess sort of counts as a publication.

Take more risks (or at least be willing to): Probably failed this one. 🙂

Get my head down and work hard in the final year: I half managed this, though I suspect I could have work a bit harder if I hadn’t got completely bored with computer science by this point.

Learn how and when to say “no”: I’m a little better at this and have managed to avoid a few things that I didn’t want to do, and even when I’ve taken on more responsibilities I’ve actually found myself in a position where I can delegate a lot of the work anyway.

Finish working on some of the site ideas I have: The second version of Rogue Students is coming along slowly, which is something I’ve wanted to get done for ages. I haven’t really worked on any of my other site ideas though and I’m letting a lot of my domains expire because I don’t have time to put sites on them all.

I don’t think I can be bothered to set any firm resolutions for this year, other than to work really hard and finish my MA, go to the gym more often and decide what the hell I’m going to do come September.

On a completely tangential note, I finally filled in the forms to start my own limited company on Friday (actually I completed the process online using a company formations business because it was only a little bit more and saved me an awful lot of time), so I’m hoping that tomorrow I’ll hear from Companies House that the incorporation is complete and I’ll be a company director. It seems a bit strange to be doing this so early on, but it’s something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time so I’m glad that I’ve finally got around to it.
