Get an n900 mobile phone.

Runs debian and is completely hackable.

Oh and does all you ask out of the box with no new software needed.

All you really need is a camera which can record an accurate timestamp with each image, and some way of correlating that with NMEA GPS logs. Trekbuddy for any J2ME device with a bluetooth GPS unit will record logs for you, I got a GPS radio for about GBP20 on ebay.

I did this first time I was in Japan, in fact—I don’t remember what software I used for it, but it was on the mac, for sure. I’ll try and dig it up if you want.

As for notes, well, I would often just take photos of the plaques next to a display. Pen and paper, maybe?
